Grown Man Draws Gerbil, London

"Giant Robot vs Gerbil" continues apace. It's my mission to learn 3d by making a little animation in as quick a time as poss (which means it should be ready sometime after the Olympics)

Here's some sketches and an early render of the Gerbil in all his scraggy glory.

Mental note: buy a scanner.

Here's the little fella getting the funky matrix treatment:

And here's the furry little critter in all his 3d glory (well most of it):

Only 99.99999999999 percent of the process to go...

New Animation!

This is done. At last. Hope you like it.

The Mainstage

Here's the first part of another taster I directed a little while back.

It's a music show spoof starring Alice Lowe whose Jackal Films has just started over here.

I'll post parts 2 and 3 as when...

Going On...

Over Summer and into Autumn I've been directing a taster tape / mini pilot called "Going On" at weekends and whenever we could spare the time... can't say much at this point but it is a sketch show based around an arts and culture type show.

Here's the incomparable Justin "Jedwards" Edwards as a Cuban guitarist.

The brilliant Zoe Gardner as a presenter, the admirable Alex Kirk as a saucy postcard artist.

The inimitable Ben Wilbond and the estimable (I'm running out of adjectives) Lorna Watson join us to re-create a 60s era version of the same show, a middle class dinner party twatfest and the studio links...

We had a great location (courtesy of resourceful producer / DOP Simon Maunder) and one of the hottest days of summer (courtesy of world ending climate change) to recreate this Wire type cop drama:

No expense spent: cutting up and burning Primark tat in a car park in readiness for a zombie sequence:

Art director supremo Josh Topp moonshines as a zombie:

An afternoon of greenscreen malarkey to recreate film clips from different eras and we were done.

Knee deep in post now but should be finished soonish...

Thanks to Josh and Justin for the photographs. Clicky clicky for bigger versions...

Over to my shiny brand new Vimeo account to show you this...

Giant Robot vs Gerbil Animatic Jan 2010 from Gareth Tunley on Vimeo.

It may look like a disturbed four year old has got his hands on a computer and a bag of coffee but it is in fact the animatic for "Giant Robot vs Gerbil" a new animation I'm doing as part of my ongoing quest to teach myself 3D which judging by my efforts so far may be the death of me.

Blender Bloke

Those of you not interested in 3D Modelling and computer animation need read no further.

Hello... hello...?

Helped along by this tutorial from some dude in Oklahoma with way too much time on his hands I have made this freaky looking fucker:

He doesn't look too bad from a distance which means he'd be fine as an extra. Standing behind a box. And a lot of smoke. Dressed in dark colours in a dim light.

Torso not tooooo shabby:

He's also helped by the funky matrix style lines all over him, but take a closer look...

Warghhh! Jesus God! what is that?... looks like he's escaped from a burns unit or some Roswell style experimental facility. Maybe that's why he's frowning so much, it certainly wasn't intentional on my part.

I will soldier on, putting some colour, hair and clothes on him and try and make him move about but I fear there may be no saving the poor sap. Still it's an improvement on this from just after Xmas...

Hear This...

It ain't pretty but after much swearing and rooting around in bags of old cable spaghetti Lord Tunley Mansion is now wired for sound...

Now I have no excuse but to finish this ...

Amazing in fact... it's only gonna be on Vimeo for a while apparently so clicky clicky now.

Down Terrace

Last summer I spent a day's filming in Brighton acting in a small part (as a gangland enforcer, typecast again) in Down Terrace . The film has just got a release according to proper film world journo big wigs here and here.

Down Terrace is the directorial debut of sometime Lord Tunley collaborator (by which I mean boss) and general all round good egg Ben Wheatley and the big screen debut (as far as I know) of Rob Hill and his real life Dad who plays his Dad in the film.

All concerned did such a good job that the film has already won two awards.

Ahem... whoopee.

Nicked Caves

This is "The Cave Children" which I made a good few years ago with Simon Farnaby (now of "Bunny and the Bull" Fame) and Tony Law and the Brothers Lamont, Remy and James, behind the scenes doing a good deal of the producing and technical heavy lifting.

Heads up: it's a bit "odd".

We did all the keyed scenes in a bedroom in the Lamont's house which we (by which I mean mainly they and art director supremo Josh Topp) spent a day painting blue, as you can see from these exclusive, candid, access all areas behind the scenes shots...

That's Tony Law on the massive sound stage at Lamont studios.

Josh spent hours and hours building the train interior from bits and bobs (mostly from a Homebase as I recall) and was paid only in lager (actually he probably provided that himself as well). He did a fantastic job and it's a pity you don't see more of it in the film.

Dig the crazy strip lights gaffered to the wall. Health and safety my arse.

The whole thing cost about three hundred quid so Blair Witch eat your heart out.

Excuses, Excuses

The present animation limps to completion. This 'car' is the latest addition. This will only whizz past in the foreground all blurry like but even so it's pretty shonky even by my standards. Thing is, things like this...

...and the attendant bottles of booze keep getting in the way of doing a better job. Ah well... almost there...
